This concert focuses on established forms and styles performed in innovative ways. Bernstein’s rousing Overture to Candide takes the form of Rossini’s opera overtures to a whole new level, Tchaikovsky takes a cue from Mozart in his Mozartiana Suite, Villa-Lobos gives a Latin beat to Bach in his Bachianas Brasileiras. Russian composer Balakirev mentors a young Naval officer named Rimsky-Korsokov in writing his Symphony No. 1, which has been deemed “the first Russian symphony” due to his heavy use of Russian nationalistic folk songs and themes.
